Our Journey Through Preeclampsia: Zayn’s Story

Our Journey Through Preeclampsia: Zayn’s Story

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication that usually occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It’s characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organs, often the liver and kidneys. Symptoms can include swelling, headaches, changes in vision, and protein in the urine. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health risks for both mother and baby. Early detection and proper medical care are key to managing preeclampsia and ensuring a healthy outcome.

Our Journey Through Preeclampsia: Zayn’s Story

Our Journey Through Preeclampsia: Zayn’s Story

When we found out we were expecting our first baby, we were overjoyed. My pregnancy with our son, Zayn, started off perfectly. Every check-up brought reassurance, and we looked forward to each milestone. By the time we reached the third trimester, everything seemed to be going smoothly—until it wasn’t.

The night after our baby shower, at 31 weeks, I woke up to a little bleeding. It wasn’t much, but enough to make us feel like something wasn’t quite right. We headed to the hospital just to be safe, thinking it would be a quick check-up and we’d be on our way home. Instead, we were met with news that would change everything.

My blood pressure was dangerously high—199/110—and testing revealed a high level of protein in my urine. I was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia, a condition I had only vaguely heard about before that moment. They started me on magnesium to manage the symptoms and try to buy us some time, but after just one day, our baby’s heart rate started to drop. The doctors decided it was time to deliver.

At just 31 weeks and 1 day, our son Zayn was born via emergency C-section. He weighed 2 lbs 7 oz and measured 13.5 inches long—tiny, fragile, but already so strong. He spent 52 days in the NICU, a time that felt like both a lifetime and a blur. Every beep, every test, every small gain or setback became part of our daily rhythm.

Leaving the hospital without our baby was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. But day by day, Zayn grew stronger. He defied the odds and amazed us all with his resilience. Today, he’s a happy, healthy, almost 3-year-old with no complications from his early arrival—a walking, giggling reminder of how far we’ve come.

Our experience with preeclampsia was unexpected and terrifying, but it also taught us just how strong we are as a family. It’s a chapter of our story that we carry with us, and one we hope brings comfort or awareness to others walking a similar path.

How We Beat the Odds: Alayna’s Story

Finding out we were pregnant again in 2024 brought a wave of mixed emotions—joy, fear, hope, and uncertainty. After the traumatic birth of our son Zayn at just 31 weeks due to severe preeclampsia, the idea of walking that road again was overwhelming. We were happy, of course, but also scared. Would history repeat itself?

As soon as we saw those two pink lines, we made our first appointment and got in to see the doctor right away. I knew I wanted this pregnancy to look different. I wanted to feel more prepared, more informed, and—if possible—more in control. So, I dove in. I read everything I could get my hands on. I spent hours online, scrolling through forums, reading research articles, and watching videos of other women from around the world who had overcome preeclampsia and carried their babies safely to term.

With each story, I gained confidence. I started to piece together a plan—one that included close monitoring by my doctors, a strict diet, and a carefully chosen combination of supplements. I was determined to give this baby girl the best chance, and myself the peace of mind I so desperately needed.

And it worked.

With the support of my care team and the discipline I poured into every single day of that pregnancy, I made it. On a beautiful day at 36 weeks and 6 days, we welcomed our daughter Alayna into the world. She was 5 lbs 4 oz and 17.5 inches long—tiny, but full of strength and light. No emergency C-section. No NICU stay. Just a moment of pure relief and joy that I had dreamed about for so long.

This pregnancy taught me the power of preparation, advocacy, and believing that a different outcome is possible. Every child’s story is different, and every mother’s journey is unique. Alayna’s birth gave me the healing I didn’t know I needed, and a reminder that even after trauma, there is hope.
